A Republican activist from Aurora who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in connection with a larger fraud prosecution was sentenced Monday to a year's probation and a $3,450 fine.

Cruising along Interstate 70 after a campaign event this spring, Mark Udall picks out the trace of a barely visible frozen waterfall that no one else in the car can even see — an indication of just how well the outdoorsman and Democratic congressman knows this stretch of the Rockies.

The waterfall shares the ridge with dozens of drilling rigs that now dot the region. As he talks about the risks of the Bush administration's full-bore approach to drilling in the West, Udall shows a flash of anger.

"We've had an oil-and-gas man for eight years as president; we've had an oil-and-gas man for eight years as vice president. There is no question we've gone too far," said Udall, who is running for Colorado's open Senate seat.

A coalition determined to change the face of faith in the public square met Thursday night in Denver, reports Electa Draper.
