Republican National Committeeman Mark Hillman will not seek any elected office next year, he announced in a mass email to friends on Sunday afternoon.
The former Senate Majority Leader and acting State Treasurer had been mentioned as a possible candidate for the GOP nomination as US Senator, Governor, or 4th District Congressman. He lost narrowly to Democrat Cary Kennedy for State Treasurer in 2006. Here is the text of Hillman's announcement:
I have decided not to seek elected office in 2010. Much has changed since I last ran in 2006 - my wife and I have "settled down" in my hometown of Burlington and a six-month-old boy has drastically changed our priorities. Campaigning for statewide or federal office is very demanding and our party deserves candidates who are willing to make that campaign a top priority. At this time, that simply isn't a commitment I am willing to make.
I am truly grateful for your support over the years and if, in a few years, it turns out that another campaign is right for me, for my family, and for Colorado, I would be honored to again have your support.
In the meantime, I intend to work hard as your friend, as a conservative committed to limited government and constitutional freedom, and as your Republican National Committeeman to do all I can to help our candidates and our party succeed by returning to our roots and unifying around our core conservative principles.
Yours for freedom,
Mark Hillman
Yours for freedom works both ways.
The political winds shift with time and my side is winning for the moment and I am enjoying the ride. But I recognize and accept that this will not last. Change is inevitable and is the foundation of our Republic.
Mr. Hillman is wise not to run for now as the winds are not running in favor of the Republicans. I understand their anger and frustrations having felt the same way during the Reagan, Bush, and Contract with America years.
"Yours for freedom" is now our mantra as we "return to our roots and unify around our core liberal principles". We the "spineless liberals" as Mr. Andrews claims with his KNUS nonsense, we are in charge and we will do everything to "help our candidates and our party succeed".
All in all Hillman would be a breath of fresh air compared to Beauprez, Caplis, or Tancredo and I wish him well. I still would not vote for him.
Good News- No Candidacy for Hillman
Great News ,I think I have heard the old "spend more time with my family" excuse from Mark., which really means he has no shot at getting elected. Hard core conservatives had their turn at running the state. They accomplished little and left the state with all kinds of problems (like highways) that still need to be resolved.
Conservatives are much better at complaining about Democrats actually doing something than doing anything themselves for the state. So I am sure Mark will settle into a talk radio gig or writing newspaper columns as it is much easier to be a Monday morning quarterback than to actually try and do something positive.
Doug Hubka
Hillman
Doug,
You're wrong.
Hillman would have a decent chance...maybe the best chance of anyone likely to run.
But he has a 6-month old son and doesn't want to spend most of his son's first two years out on the road raising money for a campaign. I think he's made the right decision even though I'd be extremely happy if he were our Senator.
By the way, as for implying that Mark is taking the easy way out, have you paid the least bit of attention to what he has done, including being term-limited out of the State Senate and serving as State Treasurer for a time?
What have you done that lets you say that someone like Hillman isn't trying to do something positive?
Your comment is ridiculous and ill-informed.
Term limits and the positive life of Mark Hillman says Ruse.
Thats right Doug. Only patriotic right wing over achievers like Kaminsky and Hillman count. You and I are ill-informed and ridiculous.
Just look what Hillman has done with his term limited easy way out. A state senator and temporary state treasurer appointed by a republican govenor then discarded by the voters by 40,000 votes. How could you or I duplicate such an exalted positive life.
Pay more attention next time Doug. Its not our place to question politicians who fink out when they know their party is crap with the voters.
not just Doug...
Joan,
Have you ever done a damn thing other than sit there and complain, (and not very effectively I might add)?
Do you have kids? If not, how can you judge Hillman's decision? If yes, how can you judge it as a bad decision?
Have you ever run for office or made a substantial effort to try to help get anyone elected?
really, what use are you?
The Ruse is an emotional wreck over Hillman.
Ruse. I'm sorry. You are right. Hillman is a good Republican father, a patriot, and a loser. I shall fast for forty days in the desert and take a bath in Ajax and Clorox afterwards as penance for my "low brow" sins.
What use am I? Only the shadow knows.
