DeGette: Hickenlooper's as liberal as I am

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, who is seeking the two-year appointment to the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by U.S. Senator Ken Salazar, said Thursday it was "ridiculous" that a woman hadn't yet served in that role or as governor of Colorado and doubted that "the press, or the chattering class, seriously consider any of the women candidates."

Gov. Bill Ritter said he will make a choice soon to replace Salazar, who was named Wednesday by President-elect Barack Obama to head the U.S. Department of Interior. Here is a list of potential nominees, including DeGette. And here's video of DeGette's remarks...

“Colorado has never had a woman (U.S.) senator or a woman governor," said DeGette during an editorial board meeting at The Denver Post. "And so, in a way, this is the perfect time for us to have a woman because we actually have the ability to appoint somebody, have them serving as an incumbent, and I think that’ll increase the chances in 2010.

“I think it’s kind of ridiculous that after all these years we’ve never had a woman in either of those positions. Fifty-two percent of the electorate are women. And the other thing I will say is I don’t think that the press, or the chattering class, seriously consider any of the women candidates. And, I’ll put my record up against anybody’s record on accomplishments.”

Other possible women appointees to the Senate seat that DeGette mentioned by name were state Treasurer Cary Kennedy and House Majority Leader Alice Madden, who is term-limited out of office.

DeGette, who has been re-elected to her House seat six times, also addressed criticism that she is too liberal to win statewide, were Ritter to appoint her to the Senate seat.

"The pundits say, well Diana is from Denver and she's too liberal to run statewide. John Hickenlooper, who's the mayor of Denver, is the frontrunner. It's like...hmmmm. And I love John. But frankly I would bet you - he doesn't have a Congressional voting record - but if you look at some of the things he's done, he's probably at least as liberal as me."

She looks sick - is she?

I's Hispanic and I assure you we are tired of her games in our community. We got caught up in voting all Democrat as we were suggested to do this year with Obama running for office. I think our coomunity will change in 2010 as we need someone that trutly understands the changing demographic of Denver and it surely isn't Degetter. We hear there is a storng conservative business man going to run against her and that is exciting to me and many of my friends. We need a new face and someone that is not so distant to Denver. Degette is not a true Denver person and wish she would go to Senate and then she would see when election time comes around. She would never carry the state.
Seems only the gay Denver is voting her in each year and I understand that is about to change since Obamab made it clear that they don't support gay marriages either. Some form of conservatism might be better all all walks of life in our community. We can't agree on everything but at least we get the truth from them it seems.

just like all the rest

Let me get this straight: She feels "entitled" because she is a woman? That confers no special privileges, nor should it. She represents Dem's in her district but not the rest of her constituents who do not agree with her positions. I thought she had accomplished little (real, constructive work) on our behalf even before all this current mess. She is proud of her record? Wow... We seem to have a LARGE class in society who are mostly concerned with "me first!" - this is another example of it.

As liberal as DeGette? Not Something to be proud of

Diana DeGette is a joke and always has been. Among the worst Representatives in Congress, DeGette has consistently represented only the voters in her District who are registered Democrats. Even if Mayor Hickenlooper could be considered as blatantly anti- business development, anti Republican, anti-Choice (as it is 'her way or the highway) as DeGette, he will never be as arrogantly rude a Representative as she is. Conservatively speaking, DeGette is unqualified for the Congress, including the position she presently has.

Last call for Orphan C.

What we have here is a dis-connect with reality. My way or the highway says OrphanC. In my opinion the joke is C's rant.

Tell me C. Isn't that what a representative is supposed to do represent the majority of voters in their district be they Republicans or Democrats. I don't think you will find many representatives in Congress who got there by representing the minority of voters in their districts.

Being a "joke, arrogantly rude, and among the worst representatives in Congress" appears to be your problem not Representative DeGette's.

If Dianna wants it she should get it

But really I am hoping she will stay in the house where I envision her to be, ultimately, the third most powerful person in the U S A. I think Andrew Romanoff or Cary Kennedy would make an excellent senator. Andrew is unemployed and Cary is right where we need her now. Others need not apply unless they can guarantee a Democrat will be elected in their CDs.

"We must recognize that the accepted trade off between freedom and security is misguided, because our values are the essence of our strength. If dungeons, brute force and arbitrary rule were the keys to real power, Saudi Arabia would be a model for the future.
