Colo.'s Katherine Harris threatens '08 election

Colorado, as anyone following the election campaign knows, is a major presidential battleground state. Both John McCain and Barack Obama have visited the state multiple times, including in recent/coming days. Though a new poll shows Obama taking a commanding 12-point lead, everyone expects both the presidential and U.S. Senate race here to be very close. That's why the Secretary of State Mike Coffman's (R) moves should worry everyone in Colorado and elsewhere. We've got our own Katherine Harris here - and a careful look at the news suggests he's moving to game this election in a state that could be the Florida of 2008.

I say "careful look" because Coffman's behavior - while outrageous and potentially election-throwing - has received coverage mostly in the back pages of local newspapers (and similarly little attention from the national media). But if you bother to dig down, you will see what I'm talking about - and it's scary.

Here's page 21 of Saturday's Rocky Mountain News:

The story on the left describes Coffman's efforts to invalidate roughly 5,000 registrations (depending on which source you ask). Here's the crux of what's going on:

"5,000 Coloradans whose voter status is in limbo because of [a] controversial check box...The registration form asks for a driver's license or state ID number. If applicants don't have that, they're supposed to check a box and then put down at least the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. But thousands of people didn't check the box. According to a policy adopted last year by Secretary of State Mike Coffman, these applications are supposed to be listed as incomplete...National and local voting-rights organizations criticize Coffman's policy, saying it violates other federal laws. They say Coffman is unfairly putting up barriers for people who are eligible to vote and want him to change his policy."

The check box is "controversial" because you are asked to check it on the form if you don't "have" a driver's license or ID card. Here's what it looks like on the form (which you can download and see yourself here):

So, here's the thing - what's the definition of "have?" I may have one at my house or in my car, but not with me at the very moment I am filling out the registration form. In that case, it would be logical - and, in fact, honest - for me to not check that box, while also putting down the last four digits of my social security number as my selected method of verifying my registration. Alternately, for whatever reason (privacy, etc.), I may simply feel more comfortable listing the last 4 digits of my social security number, rather than my entire driver's license number. So therefore, I might have listed my social security number and not checked the box.

And yet, if you made any of those logical choices - if you gave all the social security information required by law, but simply didn't check the box - Coffman is attempting to use that choice to potentially invalidate your registration and prevent you from voting.

In case you think Coffman's move isn't extreme or motivated by partisanship, consider the fact that two big Republican counties are doing exactly the opposite of Coffman. As the Rocky Mountain News notes, "Election officials in Jefferson and Larimer counties also disagree with Coffman, saying they are weighing in on the side of the voter and won't disqualify people because of what they call a technicality." The Denver Post reports that Coffman reacted by sending a letter to other counties telling them they cannot follow suit, meaning two Republican counties are registering these voters, but others are not.

Thus, it isn't surprising that the Rocky Mountain News notes that "the largest number [of registrations affected by Coffman's edict] are Democrats, followed closely by unaffiliated voters," and "hundreds live in predominately minority neighborhoods in Denver and Aurora" (ie. traditionally Democratic constituencies).

Remember, Coffman is an up-and-coming Republican "star" - he's simultaneously Secretary of State and running to replace Colorado U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R). So he's not some nonpartisan election observer - as I said before, he's positioning himself to be Katherine Harris, who also went on to use her notoriety as an election thief to win a seat in Congress.

And Mike Coffman in particular understands that 5,000 Democratic votes is no small number in a place like Colorado. A 12,000 vote switch from Republican to Democrat in 2006 would have cost him his election to the Secretary of State's office.

To be sure, there are going to be a lot of election-day shenanigans all over the country, much of it in the shadows. But what we're seeing here in Colorado is a very public attempt to use Republican-controlled offices to potentially disenfranchise thousands and rig the election. Indeed, the Denver Post now reports that Coffman has asked his fellow Republican crony, state Attorney General John Suthers (R), to validate his moves with an official legal opinion so as to trip up potential pre- and post-election legal challenges to the disenfranchisement. This isn't a conspiracy theory - it's happening all right out in the open for everyone to see.

It all adds up to the kind of coordinated Republican scheme we've seen in the last two elections. And once again, that scheme could throw a national election.

Invalidation of 5000 voter registrations

Sounds like someone's not sure about the IQ of the Colorado voters. Having lived in Colorado for a few years, I have to say I never met anyone who would be confused about filling out that form and found the people of Colorado to be above average in intelligence. If you can't fill out that form, then maybe you shouldn't be voting...period.

Actually, though, I think this is much to do about nothing. If those people show up at the polls and insist, I'm sure they will be able to vote and their information checked and corrected and their votes would be counted eventually.

But, if they were registered by ACORN, they probably won't show up at the polls.

Mike Coffman

David, you are so on target, it is scary. You eloquently put to words what I have been saying for a year now. I do predict McCain will win and that voter fraud is what will do it for him. Mike Coffman is an ego-centric maniac who flies into a rage when he doesn't get his way. He does exactly as the party tells him, just like a good little commie. He is going to make Katherine Harris look meek. You may also be interested in this letter I sent:

Adelia Trujillo Cisneros, an elderly voter, hopes that her vote still counts. But the question is: "Will it be counted?" Since her ballot was mailed in, the clerk of the county in which she lives will wait until after the election to decide whether to count her ballot, and will do so only if the mailed-in ballots can have an effect on the results. This is wrong. Every ballot cast should be counted. As an American, I, like Ms. Cisneros, cherish and hold dear my right to cast a vote and I do so proudly.

Following the 2004 election, I read a book in which the author asserted that Arapahoe County did not count thousands of ballots, and he had evidence to support this assertion. So, I called the Arapahoe County Clerk's office to see if this was true. Imagine my chagrin to receive a positive response. And then she told me that my ballot was not opened in 2000, either. The reason? Neither election was close, and in both, the margin of victory was more than the number of "absentee" ballots cast, and therefore, these votes could not have made a difference. This was news to me, since both the 2000 and the 2004 elections were among the most-closely contested in U.S. history, and since I was raised to believe that every vote counts and is counted. So much for the illusion of "democracy." It seems they take this right of Iraqis more seriously than they do ours. When I find out that they didn't bother to open my mailed-in ballot, imagine how I must feel, how angry I must be.

The republicans claim that, next to the governorship, the Secretary Of State's position is the most important state-wide position, because this allows them to control who gets to vote and how elections are handled. And this is most assuredly borne out by the charade being conducted by our own illustrious SOS, Mike Coffman, a republican operative who does exactly as he is told by the party. I assert that the SOS should be a non-partisan position, far removed from party politics and influence. In Arapahoe County, Tracey Baker, a good republican, carried out his orders when he failed to count my vote, while he was busy consorting with his mistress. Now it appears that many voters will be disenfranchised in Colorado, some for the flagrant violation of failing to check a little box that Mike Coffman had added just for this very reason. I never cease to be amazed at the phobia republicans have for not letting everyone vote and not counting all the votes. Yet, they wage a war in a far-away land so that its citizens can vote. Well I have news for you: My vote is every bit as important to me as a blue finger is to Iraqis! Count our votes, please! Is this too much for an American to ask?

So go ahead and mail in your ballots. Vote early. Go to the polls on Nov. 4. Then go home, watch the results, and wonder if anyone actually bothered to count your vote.

Katherine Harris Lives!

Crikey! If people can't follow basic directions, which also likely makes them disinterested citizens who don't contribute to their community, I don't think they deserve special considerations. If voting just the sake of voting is all that's valued, which appears to be the case for the democrats (vote ignorance) then why bother? All the politicos care about is being elected. They'll say whatever it takes to dupe people to vote knowing that most are too lazy to do anything or keep them accountable. It's a scam that's been played for a long time.

Personally, I'd like to see voter education tests. In order to vote people should have to demonstrate basic political proficiency and awareness. Rather than just pulling the lever for some slob just because they call for "change" the citizen should have to articulate just exactly what "These changes" entail, both in terms of costs and implications to society. Anything less just perpetuates the slave-slave master system we have today.

Meatpie and tatters Republican slop.

Speaking of slobs who imply Democrats don't contribute to the community meatballs like Meatpie have very big mouths. Hey Meat. Isn't it Republicans who "vote ignorance". I'll wager you're a Bush Reegin voter. It doesn't get any more ignorant than you.

Isn't it obvious?

It would seem that the first box is superfluous. The aspiring voter's intent is completely clear from the information he provided. The box just confuses things and should be ignored.

CCryder

Colorado's Katherine Harris

So now that Mike Coffman is slightly being exposed not only by the Rocky Mountain news but also slightly by Governor Ritter, what are and what can we the people to do about this outrage?????

Also, now there is a loss of what? 11,000 ballots in Denver that never got taken care of. I call this foul and we need something to be done and now, not after the election.

Isn't this FRAUD

Charges must be brought against Coffman for this travesty of justice.
