Prez candidates outgoogle Britney Spears

Admittedly suffering from writer's block this morning, the bane of a blogger, I found myself playing on googletrends and found some good news. Since the start of the year, folks here in Colorado have been consistently searching more often on google for "Clinton," "Obama," than they have been for "Britney Spears."

Ok, that wasn't so much true last year, before the presidential campaign kicked into high gear and Spear's problems were dominating the tabloids. But it says something about how this year's presidential race is capturing the public imagination.

Then I tried iphone, Obama, Clinton, Mccain, and I got this: Obama beats out the iphone since the start of the year, but the iphone beat Mccain and Clinton.

You can easily lose your work day in GoogleTrends. For example, type in "Schaffer, Udall," the two contenders in Colorado's hot Senate race, and you get this graph, where Schaffer barely shows up.

I tried "Jared Polis, William Shafroth, Joan Fitzgerald," the Democratic candidates duking it out in Colorado's second Congressional District, and the names don't get warrant enough attention to even get a graph.

Then in an exercise in humility, I tried the Gang of Four members' names: John Andrews, Ross Kaminsky, David Sirota, Nancy Watzman. And I got this. John, I'm betting that your popularity has something to do with the, well, fact that there are a lot of John Andrews out there. But...maybe not. Ok, back to work.

iPhone and more

Hi Nancy,

It's not that surprising to see the interest in Obama from the same web-savvy crowd that would also be researching the iPhone. And it's not that surprising to see less interest in McCain on the web.

So here's the question: Will it remain true in 2008 that the likelihood of someone voting is proportional to his or her age. If so, Obama's popularity among the iPhone crowd may not translate into votes.

As for our names in Google trends, given that I'm not paid to do this stuff, I'm almost glad I don't spend enough time to show up in that list.
