Hi. My name is America, and I'm an oil-aholic

Ninety-seven U.S. senators voted earlier this week to stop filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for six months in an attempt to ease gas prices. But Mad Voter Heath Haussamen calls that a "do-nothing vote," arguing that Congress must instead focus on America's oil addiction, and find ways to wean the country onto other fuel sources.

Something needs to change

American citizens are absolutely addicted to oil, I say this as a person who is addicted myself. For those of us who have grown up in a society where there have been no limits on our consumption, it is unrealistic to expect that people will voluntarily give up using as much oil as they want to a daily basis. Rising gas prices may be a blessing in disguise, for while they certainly put financial pressures on working families, they also force an amount of self-control, budgeting, and awareness when it comes to oil consumption that has been lacking for the average American for decades.
