Oregon Awaits Candidates

Sen. Hillary Clinton will campaign in Oregon tomorrow and Friday, crossing paths with her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, who will work the state on Friday and Saturday.

"It's full-speed ahead campaigning," says Frank Dixon, vice-chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, an uncommitted superdelegate who expects to be invited to meet with both.

"Both campaigns will want the candidates to touch base with us," he says.

Political observers expect Obama to win the Oregon primary on May 20. It is a mail-in vote, and there are 100,000 new Democrats registered. Voters have already begun to send in their ballots.

Hillary Clinton has already visited Oregon twice. Barack Obama has made three trips.

"Six months ago no one thought our primary would attract this kind of attention," says Marc Siegel, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Oregon.

"One month ago no one thought this would be a decisive primary. With every Tuesday, Oregon gains in importance. The candidates keep focusing more and more attention on it. There are 52 delegates up for grabs."
