U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn has decided to petition onto the Republican primary ballot. Lamborn faces Jeff Crank and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Bentley Rayburn in the race for the 5th Congressional District.
In a letter to friends and supporters, Lamborn said the El Paso County Republican Party was overwhelmed when six times the normal number of Republicans showed up for February caucuses.
The El Paso County Republican Party said, in a news release, that "there . . . were challenges that were overcome and we achieved success."

Petition vs Caucus
Has anyone researched the difference between office holders after they are elected when they got on the ballot by petition or caucus-assembly? My guess is that those who get on through the caucus system are much more accountable to and representative of their district.
Also, has anyone studied the difference between the caucus and primary states in this presidential election cycle? My guess is the caucus states saw much bigger increases in true civic participation, things like writing letters to the editor, volunteering to work in a campaign or political party, interest in running for local office, etc.
What do you think? We'd love to hear about it at our first Denver Speakers Corner, a week from next Sunday (May 4), 4 p.m., in Civic Center Park. Details and optional RSVP at http://cocacop.meetup.com/2
