Wally Stealey, a legendary Democrat in Colorado, onetime lobbyist and former political science professor at the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo who schooled many a politician, brought down the house at the state Democratic Party's 75th annual Jefferson Jackson Dinner on Friday night at the Colorado Convention Center.
Receiving the lifetime achievement award, Stealey, 73, left the partisan crowd of more than 1,900 with this thought:
"I've been reading a lot and following elections as I've always done. And I'm starting to hear a little bit of talk about reaching across the aisles. Well let me tell you hard-working Democrats, I didn't come to this party to reach across the aisle and hold hands with Republicans. I came up here tonight because I just plain want to beat the bastards. Thank you."
