Perlmutter heads to South America with Sec. Rice

Rep. Ed Perlmutter is in Colombia, the country that is. The Golden Democrat left for South America this morning with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and nine other members of Congress to meet with Colombia leaders about a potential free trade agreement.

(The trade deal apparently is not an easy sell for the Bush administration as the U.S. economy sputters.)

While in the country, Perlmutter will meet with President Uribe and observe the security situation in Medellin, a city attempting to recover from its drug-cartel history.

The trip will be the first to Colombia for Perlmutter, a first-term congressman who also traveled to Iraq in November.
