Really, what an offensive statement Clinton made to the millions of American and Mexican workers who lost their jobs and saw their wages destroyed thanks to NAFTA - a deal pushed by the Clinton administration (for some more data on NAFTA, see this report from the Economic Policy Institute). You want to talk about showing how utterly out of touch you are, that's how you do it - you laugh and say you barely remember the debate over the very trade deal that is destroying America's middle class. And then after you stop laughing, you go to the Senate floor to vote to expand NAFTA, as Clinton says she's going to in the next few weeks.
VIDEO: Clinton Thinks NAFTA Is Hilarious
Now David,
I generaly agree with you, but your cherry picking of a partial snippet is way over the top. Clinton's humor remark was about Ross Perot and not about Nafta at all. From a Butte boy who knows a thing or two about the history of the working class' strugle, your silly disengenuous dessemination of the clip is counter productive to the real seriousness of the issue. That is, unless, your either secretly working for the Repugs, or trying to be like Matt Drudge. It seems that the author even privatized it to prevent its blatent miss use.
Trade Defict With Mexico
Um, back to NAFTA, when NAFTA was first ratified, the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico was approximately $1.6 billion. Today, the trade deficit with Mexico is approximately $64 billion. Bill Clinton's promotion of NAFTA in the early 1990's is a serious dent in his presidential legacy and, rather than laugh about a bunch of charts, Hillary should have owned up to this and explained how she would correct NAFTA rather than appearing to be too cozy with multinational corporations.
Most Americans are sick and tired of corporate trade deals and policies that have piled up $5 trillion in trade-related debt since 1994 and have laid off thousands upon thousands of workers. It's truly not a laughing matter and it's bankrupting the country. Let's get serious folks!
